New Bern Civic Theatre is a downtown performing arts venue that presents local concerts, national concerts, and annual seasons of plays, musicals, and youth theatre events. NBCT has called the historic Athens Theatre home since 1980.
Construction began on the Athens Theatre at 412 Pollock Street in 1910. The doors opened April 11, 1911. Designed by architect Herbert W. Simpson, the Athens Theatre was a gala theatre for silent movies, Vaudeville, traveling theatre troupes and locally produced live productions.
The Theatre has changed names over the years – The Show Shop, The Kehoe Theatre and the Tryon Theatre. During the 1970’s the theatre was vacant and deserted. In February 1980, NBCT purchased, renovated and renamed it the Athens Theatre.
In 2022, the theatre was shut down at the end of the season for extensive interior renovations. The newly renovated theatre will reopen in February 2023 for the first production of the season.
The 2023 season will showcase the newly renovated interior starting with the first production on February 16th. The theatre will host 20 stage productions and concert events throughout the year. The season boasts Broadway productions, nationally recognized performing artists and film festivals. We have provided a link below for shows and ticket availability.
