About New Bern

With over 150 historic landmarks, including the magnificent Tryon Palace and the birthplace of Pepsi, New Bern, NC is an ideal destination for those simply in search of fun or a glimpse into history. Here, in the second oldest city in North Carolina, the past meets the present and invites visitors to sample its richness. During your stay at The Aerie, visit our museums, galleries, historic attractions, marinas, parks, historic homes and churches. Stroll through our downtown filled with specialty shops and restaurants, or enjoy an informative tour from a historic trolley.

Boaters, fishing enthusiasts and lovers of the outdoors have endless opportunities to explore including sailing or canoeing on our waterways of the Pamlico Sound, and strolling along the banks of the Trent and Neuse Rivers. We’re close enough to the Atlantic Ocean to plan a day trip to the beaches of Atlantic Beach, Fort Macon or Emerald Isle, and the quaint towns of Beaufort, Swansboro, and Morehead City, home to one of the deepest ports on the East Coast. Enjoy golfing at one of the excellent championship courses, hiking in the 157,000-acre Croatan National Forest, biking or spending a lazy afternoon in one of the sunny municipal parks like Union Point Park downtown New Bern.

Historic New Bern offers a variety of cultural, educational, recreational and historical attractions. Whether it’s a museum, an historical landmark, shopping, one of the annual special events or the great outdoors, there is something available for everyone. Quite a few of our guests are fans of Nicholas Sparks, the author of many books including The Wedding, The Notebook, Nights in Rodanthe, Message in a Bottle, A Bend in the Road and others—many of which have become major motion pictures. Most are based in New Bern and the coastal area of North Carolina that Nicholas calls home. We have a self-guided walking tour (click link to open a printable pdf of the self-walking tour) featuring most of the places mentioned in his novels that are within a short stroll of The Aerie.
